In my view this spot is best visited in the morning for great views over the lake as the sun slowly rises. It is quite a climb up especially if you wish to head all the way up to the top of the tower. There are quite a few informative boards about ancient Chinese history and leading up to modern history.

阅江楼的建设设想始于六百年前。公元1360年，明太祖朱元璋在卢龙山（今狮子山）指挥8万伏兵，大败陈友谅40万军队，奠定了大明王朝建都南京的基础。朱元璋称帝后，于公元1374年赐改卢龙山名为狮子山，下诏建造阅江楼，并亲自撰写《阅江楼记》，又命众文臣每人写一篇《阅江楼记》，大学士宋濂所写为最佳，后被选入《古文观止》。600余年来，虽有2篇《阅江楼记》流传于世，但因种种原因楼终未建成。 随着改革开放春天的到来，一些有识之士提出兴建“阅江楼”的动议，得到了社会各界的响应。1997年市政府正式批准建造阅江楼，经过三年多的努力，完成了部队搬迁、规划设计、方案比选等大量的前期准备工作，于1999年2月正式开工建设， 2001年9月竣工并对外开放。
